When talking of positive and negative wires the electrical terminology refers to DC voltages. In DC voltages the positive conductor is coloured red and the negative conductor is coloured black.

When talking about AC conductors the terminology refers to "hot" conductors and neutral conductors. Lamp cord in particular only use two wires to power table lamps and floor lamps. To get the polarity correct when wiring these devices the cord has to be identified. You will find that the neutral side of the cord will have a colour identifier or a raised rib. This could be a white marker on darker cables. The raised rib is more prevalent on two wire cables these days that the paint identifier.

Which side of a 120v home power outlet is the positive side?

Not all cords are polarized or have clear delineations for positive and negative. For instance, a lamp would generally not care about polarity. For those that are marked, such as for non-heavy duty electronics, the positive side will be entirely black, while the negative side will have a white stripe on it.

Can you connect 2 wire to 3 wire house has black white red and ground Appliance has black white and ground?

It seems like you are describing the Red, Black, White and Ground in your electric panel. There is 240 VAC between Black and Red and 120 VAC between Black and White and 120 VAC between Red and White. The electric panel has two busses that supply 120 VAC on alternating breakers in your panel. Essentially, the Red turns into "black" in the panel for all practical purposes. If you have a 240 VAC circuit it essentially takes up to two vertical positions in your electric panel.

What is the bright white light from when you burn magnesium strips?

The bright light is a byproduct of the reaction caused by applying heat to magnesium, causing it to chemically react with oxygen, therefore producing Magnesium Oxide.
