It depends on what kind of line you are dealing with.

If you have the lines on paper...

  1. If they do not intersect, they are parallel.
  2. If they do, measure the angle. If it is 90° then they are perpendicular.
If you have the equations of the lines.
  1. If the slopes are the same, but they have a different y-intercept, they are parallel.
  2. if the slopes are inverse reciprocals of each other (i.e. 2 and -.5) then they are perpendicular.

Can perpendicular lines be parallel lines?

It is impossible for parallel lines to be perpendicular. Perpendicular lines are intersecting lines, meaning that they cross each other. Parallel lines, on the other hand, are lines that never meet, no matter how far they are extended in either direction. So intersecting lines (which includes perpendicular lines) and parallel lines are exact opposites. Parallel lines will never meet or cross; they cannot be perpendicular.

If one of two parallel lines is perpendicular to another line is the other of the two lines parallel to the third line?

since one parallel lines is perpendicular to another line, the other parallel line is perpendicular to the line as well. so the two would not be parallel, only the original two.

Is two lines connected by their perpendicular is parallel?

Parallel lines run in the same direction. If they are intersected by one line and that line is perpendicular to both, then it proves that the lines run parallel to each other.

Is 2x-y equals -12 a parallel line or a perpendicular line?

Is 2x equals y plus 8 a parallel line or a perpendicular line?

One single line is never parallel or perpendicular. Those words tell you somethingabout the relationship between two lines.

Is -x plus 2y equals 6 a parallel line or a perpendicular line?

One single line is never parallel or perpendicular. Those words tell you somethingabout the relationship between two lines.

Is a rectangle parallel or perpendicular?

Rectangles are made up of 2 sets of parallel lines, which are perpendicular to one another.

is this statement true or falseIf a transversal is perpendicular to one of two parallel lines, then it is perpendicular to the other.?

true

Are perpendicular parallel line meet at right angles?

Parallel lines are lines that run side by side and never meet. Perpendicular lines are lines that meet in one point, forming four right angles around the point.

Why do you need parallel lines and perpendicular lines in your lives?

Construction, engineering, drawing, and architecture all use parallel and perpendicular lines. Other than that, it is an important topic because you are learning how to apply the language and tools of mathematics to an intuitive system. These topics have proven important in the history of human kind and also many before you have shown that by learning about parallel and perpendicular lines, one learns how to use math and logic. It is doubtful that you can make a living off of parallel and perpendicular lines, but if you can't understand parallel and perpendicular lines, then I worry about your future.

Why can rays be perpendicular but not parallel?

Rays pass through one point. Parallel lines never meet.

How many ways can you prove that two lines are parallel?

Two lines are parallel if they never cross one another. Another way to tell if they are parallel is if they have the same slope. Also, if the same line intersects both of them at a 90 degree angle, they would be parallel (in other words, if both lines are perpendicular to a common line, they are paraellel).
