The English term algebra derives from the name of a famous book on mathematics.
A Persian mathematician named Al-Khwarizmi wrote Al-Kitāb al-mukhtaṣar fī hīsāb al-ğabr wa'l-muqābala in Arabic around the year 820. The title translates approximately to "The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing".
The book was translated into Latin in the 1100s, under the name Liber Algebrae et Almucabola, introducing the term algebra to Western Europe.
When the word is at the start of a sentence.
Algebra was supposedly started by the thinking of Abu Abdullah Mohammad Ibn Musa al-Khawarizmi, possibly one of the greatest mathematicians who ever lived. He came up with the idea of "Al-Jabr wa-al-Muqabilah", which involved the use of alalytical solutions in linear, and quadratic forms. The very word "Algebra" is derived from the expression.
Algebra is a subject most students learn, then never use again, because they don't see the many ways it can be used. Some of the world's greatest mathematicians did not use algebra. Algebra, for some, is like trying to learn multiplication tables for the alphabet.
The origin of the name algebra is from the Arabic word Aljabr.
The word "algebra" comes from the Arabic word "al-jabr", meaning reunion and is part of the title of from a book on mathematics written by Muhammed ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi.He was an Arab mathematician who worked on algebra, arithmetic, and astronomical tables. The word "algorithm" is also derived from his name.Al-Khwarizmi did not invent algebra but his book was very influential in bringing algebra to the western world so he is generally considered the father of algebra.A Greek mathematicians Diophantus is sometimes called the father of algebra as he developed one of the earliest forms of solving equations. However he used mostly special ad hoc methods to solve equations, whilst Al- Khwarizmi was the first to solve equations using general methods.
