Solve by factoring.
Solve by taking the square root of both sides.
Trigonometry focuses specifically on the study of triangles, and concepts that are closely related to properties of triangles. Pre-Calculus is generally a preperation for the concepts of Calculus, and often reviews or builds upon concepts learned in previous forms of mathematics, which may include information learned from Trigonometry.
First, you need to learn how to do calculus. This can be accomplished through either taking a calculus class or figuring it out on your own. Next, you apply what you have learned to the problem, eventually arriving at the answer.
The only way I ever learned to find it was to think about it. The function f(x) = log(x) only exists of 'x' is positive. As 'x' gets smaller and smaller, the function asymptotically approaches the y-axis.
A real life application is a situation that you may have faced or could face in the near future, usually based on a skill learned from typical school subjects. It is used to help prepare students for such situations, or to demonstrate that something they are learning is relevant to their lives. For example, while reading a textbook on mathematics you may encounter a passage that describes a real-life application of one of the skills in the chapter.
In my opinion, the best one out there is "The Humongous Book of Calculus Problems", by W. Michael Kelley. It contains one thousand questions from warm-up algebra to second year calculus. With each question he walks you through solving it, explaining why it works and providing a battery of explanations and tips. I learned a ~lot~ from that book, enjoyed it thoroughly, and recommend it to anyone who wants to learn calculus or take a refresher.
-- Although not required, you can make it slightly easier on yourselfif you first divide each side of the equation by 4.-- Either way, you're left with a quadratic equation that isn't easilyfactorable by inspection, so you're forced to use the quadratic formulawhich you learned and then forgot.-- The quadratic formula says that when you have the quadratic equation[ Ax2 + Bx + C = 0 ],which is exactly what you have, the two solutions arex = 1/2A [ -B + sqrt(B2-4AC) ]andx = 1/2A [ -B - sqrt(B2-4AC) ].This is the perfect time to use the quadratic formula, and that's exactly how you solve your equation.
All of these describe Naval doctrine: The foundation upon which our tactics, techniques, and procedures are built, Incorporates the lessons of history, learned in both the flush of success and the bitterness of failure, AND That which is learned.
