How long is a tour And would a soldier go to Afghanistan for only a month at a time?

The length of a tour in the Army is up to 12 months. There is a possibilty of going for only a month, but that's not classified as a deployment, it's a TDY(Temporary Duty Assignment.) Most units do not do TDY's to Afghanistan, but some units so, such as the Army unit out of Naples, Italy.

What was the average pay for a soldier in Vietnam War?

A 12 month tour was average. For the US Army, extensions were in 6 month increments. So, for the USA, two tours would be 18 months, three tours 24 months. Other US branches may have been different.

Did any US soldiers serve four combat tours of duty in Vietnam?

Very very common. But one must be careful when using that word "tour." It might be different in the Marine Corps or Navy or Air Force. In the US Army the first tour was a year (12 months). After that, they were in six month increments. Therefore, if a vet says he did 3 tours with the US Army in Vietnam, then that's only 2 years (12 months for the first tour, plus 6 months for the second tour, then 6 months for his third and last tour). And any man doing over 18 months with the US Army in Vietnam almost certainly had to have re-upped (re-enlisted), and was no longer a draftee.

How long did a West point graduate serve during the Vietnam War?

US Army Draftees served 2 years on ACTIVE Duty; 6 months in training, 12 month tours in Vietnam. With 6 months remaining in the Army, many were given 6 month EARLY OUTS. Thus serving only 18 months (1 1/2 years) in the Army. 6 month "early outs" were also given to men that applied to college, or served longer than 12 months in Vietnam. US Army 3 year RA's (Volunteer's for the REGULAR ARMY) normally got to choose their MOS (Military Occupational Speciality) for enlisting for the extra year. The 6 month "early out" also applied to them. Therefore, a 3 Year RA could do a 1 year tour in Vietnam, extend for 6 months, then when that was completed, extend for 6 more months (For the Army; after the 12 month mandatory tour, each extension tour was in SIX MONTH increments-so a US Soldier (NOT a US Marine, US Sailor or US Airman) who did 3 tours in Vietnam actually did TWO YEARS in Vietnam & not 3 years, as most people might believe. Consequently, if a 3 year RA soldier (US Army) did three tours in Vietnam, he could get an "early out" of the Army after 2 1/2 years of service (six month early out). US Marines, US Sailors, US Airmen, and US Coast Guardsmen may have functioned in a different system.

What was the tour of duty in Vietnam?

One year. If a man landed on the 4th of July, then he DEROs'd out on the 4th of July the following year. Draftees did 24 months in the OD (Olive Drab-slang at the time for the US Army, the most polite term at the time, there were worse terms). 6 months in trainging (boot & AIT) then 12 months in Vietnam, then an early ETS if he got a 6 month early out. Another words a draftee could end up doing only 18 months in the OD instead of the 24 months if he did Nam time. All depended on how the Army felt at the time and their need for men. The 12 month tour applied to volunteers, draftees, and draft enduced volunteers. US Sailors only did WESTPAC cruises. If their warship did 6 months over seas, then that was their tour.
