A good analogy is why should you learn directions if you have a GPS. The GPS will get you around if you know the exact address, but if you don't then it's useless. A calculator only works if you know which buttons to press. Studying math is not just about learning how the functions work, but also learning how to think about a problem that you don't understand and come up with a way to solve it. The calculator can only do your work if you tell it what to do.
