Best Answer

The practice of tacking 9/10 of a cent on the end of a gas price goes back to when gas cost only pennies per gallon and was a tax imposed by state and federal governments. Gas stations added the fraction of a cent on the end of the price instead of rounding up the price.

Why do gas prices end with a fraction?

Lets say the gas price is 5.00 9/10. The 9/10 indicates the 9/10th of a penny. This means that for every ten gallons, you need to pay 9 cents more. If your car can fill up 30 gallons, then the actual price will be $150.27. By doing this to many cars around gas stations everywhere, it's easy to make slightly more money.

Why is the price of gas to sold to nine tenths of a penny?

just so they can measure it more accurately When I was little, I remember my parents acknowledging that the 9/10 cent was a marketing ploy to make it sound cheaper. Not every gas station used the 9/10. But everyone looked at the whole numbers and not the fractions. So someone who sold their gas for 9.9 cents could gain market share over a station selling at 10 cents.
