pi is simply the name for the Greek character πwhich is the 16th letter in the Greek alphabet. In the 1700's the mathematician William Jones adopted its use because it is the first letter of the Greek word περιφέρεια which translates to periphery which is literally the perimeter of a circle or a curve, or circumference.
