Why use maths?

Mathematics is used as a sort of tool to help us solve problems. By writing out a mathematical equation or an expression of some sort, we can find solutions to complex problems. Often, it is easier to find a solution if we assign some variables, find an equation and then solve that algebraically rather than just try to think about a solution without using maths.

So, why use it, Well, like I said, it makes life a lot easier! But many people also consider mathematics to be a beautiful subject - indeed, many believe it is a form of art. This is common in mathematicians (mostly in Pure Maths) because order and structure can be observed in situations which you would not normally expect any kind of pattern to occur.

Perhaps we could even look further into this question and actually ask ourselves 'how could we avoid using maths?'. We could try but what if we want to buy something but only have a large note. How much change do we get? Indeed, what does the number on the note mean? Basic everyday things like this have an element of mathematics in them and it is hard to not use mathematics.
