Surflan is a pre-emergent herbicide and will not control emerged weeds. Round-up is a post-emergent herbicide and will not control weeds that have not emerged. The use of the two together controls weeds that are already present and weeds that have not yet emerged, at least for a period of time dependent upon the rate of application.
