CO2 emissions are calculated in terms of pounds per gallon of fuel. The standard measure for cars is 19.62 pounds per gallon of gas. Each car will have a different result based on mileage per gallon, to calculate for your car just divide 19.62 by mpg.

One gallon of gas emits 19.4 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere. If you observe drivers on a freeway, you will notice that almost all of the passenger vehicles contain a single occupant. One person per car. So a forty mile journey by a Hummer that gets 12 mpg emits 65 pounds of CO2. Passenger buses only get 8 mpg, so would emit nearly 100 pounds of CO2. But passenger buses typically carry 20 or more passengers, so 100/20 works out to only 5 pounds of CO2 per person, versus 65 pounds for the dude in the Hummer.
