In order to subtract a fraction from a whole number one should take the bottom number from a fraction, for example if the fraction was 1 10th then the bottom number would be 10. The whole number should be divided by the bottom number, then the top number equivalent removed from the total whole number and this will leave the fraction number once the fraction has been subtracted.

You need a common denominator; change the whole number into fraction form. If its a 1, and the fraction is 3/7 then you'd have to change the 1 to a 7/7 and then subtract that way. Although, you are likely to get a negative number.

put that whole number over 1. lets say you want to subtract 3/4 from 5.

you have to put 5/1. everysingle number in existence unless otherwise noted is over 1 it is just not written...

Ex.

5 = 5/1

2346 = 2346/1

infinity = infinity/1

0 = 0/1

-346 = -346/1

... you get the idea

now use the example i gave 3/4 - 5

3/4 - 5 = 3/4 - 5/1 (now get like denominators)

3/4 - 20/4 = -17/4

the answer is negative 4.25
