How would you graph the result of -3 plus 5 as a point on the number line?

Draw the number line (horizontally) and mark -3; To add +5 go 5 marks to the right; Either mark each step right as a little arc above the line, or mark one large arc from the -3 to 5 marks to its right: _________________________________________________ _____________-_____-_____-____-_____-_____________ ____________/_\___/_\___/_\___/_\___/_\____________ ___________/___\_/___\_/___\_/___\_/___\___________ -----+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+----- __________-3_______________0__________2__________ __________________________________________________ or __________________________________________________ ______________--------------------------______________ _____________/______________________\_____________ ____________/________________________\____________ ___________/__________________________\___________ -----+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+----- __________-3_______________0__________2__________ __________________________________________________ You could put an arrow head at the right hand end of each arc.

If you have a three gallon jug and a five gallon jug No marks on either one The goal is to fill the five gallon jug with four gallons of water How is this accomplished?

AnswerThere are three ways to do this. Method 1Step 1 : Fill the 5 gallon jug and then pour it into the 3 gallon jug. The 5 gallon jug has2 gallons left.Step 2 : Now throw the 3 gallon water away. Pour the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon jug to the 3 gallon jug. So now the 3 gallon jug has just 2 gallons of water.Step 3 : Fill the 5 gallon jug again, and pour 1 gallon to the 3 gallon jug. What do u have left in the 5 gallon jug ?? 4 gallons of water.. !Method 2Next to each step, the current contents (in gallons of water) of the two jugs (5 gallon first, then 3 gallon) is written.5 0 Fill the 5 gallon jug.2 3 Pour 3 gallons into the other jug, leaving 2 gallons.2 0 Empty the 3 gallon jug.0 2 Pour the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug.5 2 Fill the 5 gallon jug again.4 3 Top up the 3 gallon jug from the 5 gallon jug, leaving 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.Method 3You fill the three gallon jug and then pour it into the five gallon jug. Then you fill it again and pour it in the five gallon jug, leaving one gallon in the three gallon jug. Then you pour out the five gallon jug, pour the one gallon from the three gallon jug into the five gallon jug, then you fill the three gallon jug, pour it into the five gallon jug, leaving four gallons in the five gallon jug. P.S Who designed that annoying bomb you're trying to defuse?

How do you find the average mpg for your car?

-Wait until your fuel meter is exactly on one of the white markings. -Write down the current odometer reading. -Find out how many gallons your tank holds (lets say 10 gallons). -Drive around like you normally would, watching the fuel meter. -When it has gone down exactly 1/4 of the way (indicated by the number of white marks, if there are 8 marks, wait until it has gone down two marks) write down the current odometer reading. -Subtract the first reading from the second reading. -Since the tank holds 10 gallons, 10/4 is 2.5, so in this time, you used 2.5 gallons of gas. But we're trying to find out how far you went on one gallon. -So divide the result of subtracting the two reading by 2.5 -Divide this result by 2.5 and you should have your MPG!
