A rational number is one that can be written as a fraction, with whole numbers for numerator and denominator; for example 1/2, 3/5, 7/3, and any whole number (for example, 7 = 7/1).

An irrational number is one that can not be written in such a way, for example the square root of any number except a perfect square (square root of 2, of 3, of 5, etc.), pi, e, etc.
