The scale is simply how many miles there are to an inch or how many miles are represented by an inch etc etc. To do this you divide the amount of miles or the larger amount by the inches the smaller amount. 400/2.5 = 160 . The scale is 160 miles per inch. Proof - 160 + 160 + 80 = 400 miles ---->>>> 1 + 1 + .5 = 2.5 inches

If the scale on a map is one inch 500 miles and the distance between two places on the map measures 625 inches how far apart are the places?

It's not likely that the map is 625 inches wide as that would result in places that are 312500 miles apart. I'll guess that was supposed to be 6.25 inches and the places are 3125 miles apart.
