Why are potholes round? That's because it's the natural shape to be formed by the action of wheels, etc. If they started to be square, say, there would be a tendency for the straight parts of the edge to contact the wheel more than the corners. So they would get broken off more. In fact, it wouldn't have got like that in the first place.
