A negative power simply means the base should be inverted. What does this mean? Well in simpler terms: the base is on the wrong side of the fraction line. So x^(-y) (that is: x to the power of negative y) is the same as 1/x^y (that is: one over x to the power of y) So 2^(-2) (two to the power of negative 2) is the same as 1/2^2 (that is: one over two to the power of negative 2) 2^2 = 4 , so 1/2^2 = 1/4 1/4 (one quarter) is 0.25. Why do negative exponents work this way? Well, think of it like this. When we multiply like bases: 5^7 x 5^2 we simply add the exponents: 5^7 x 5^2 = 5^9 similarly, if we divide like bases, we subtract the exponents: (5^7)/(5^2) = 5^5 but (5^7)/(5^2) is just another way of saying: (5^7) x (1/5^2) so we can just rewrite it: (5^7) x (5^-2) and then we add the exponents (5 + (-2)) and get 5^5 So negative exponents are a very simple way of showing information without writing a fraction.

Because it’s dividing by 2 then 2 again
