The studs (the verticle boards that hold up a wall behind the drywall in a house) are normally 16" apart. The highlight on each 16 inches 16, 32, 48 etc. on a tape make it easier to build house wall and to do things like hanging a picture on the wall. By finding a single stud in a wall you can locate all of the other studs. (be carefull when the stud you find is near the edge of the wall or opposite where another wall joins the wall from the other side.
