all you have to do is have to figure out from which of the shapes your starting with. So if you decide to start with a scale factor from the larger figure to the smaller figure all u do is the opposite. You do the small divided my the large. So if u want it from the small shape to the large shape scale factor you do the large divided by the small.

If the map or model is 1 inch and the item in real life is 32 inches then the scale is 1:32. If you have a map which is 1:500,000, then 1 inch on the map will be 500,000 inches in reality. It doesnt matter what the measurement is, it could be inches, feet, miles etc, it just means that you are scaling it to match. i.e 1 foot on the map would equate to 500,000 feet in reality.

"Scale" is the size or distance on a map compared to the actual size or distance, expressed as a ratio, e.g. 1:20 would show an item at 1/20th actual size.
