Sybil Ludington became famous for her brave nighttime ride in 1777 to warn American colonial forces of the approaching British troops during the American Revolutionary War. She rode 40 miles in the dead of night to alert troops in New York and Connecticut.
The area of Ludington State Park is 21.448 square kilometers.
Sybil made a ride at the age of sixteen to help her father muster the troops at Danbury to fight off the English invaders during the American Revolution on April 26, 1777. Without this ride the patriots in Danbury would have had no immediate help and the damage to their town would have been much worse. Her ride was twice as far as Paul Revere's. Her father was Colonel Henry Ludington, he was in charge of the Kent/Patterson area in New York.
Sybil Ludington, age 16, was sent on a horse to warn the nation that the "British are coming." She rode 40 miles (twice as far as Paul Revere.) The ride occurred on April 25, 1777. It started at her home, near Kent, NY. She rode all night, alerting the militia men in the area that the British had raided Danforth, Connecticut where colonial supplies were stored. She married Edmund Ogden, an attorney, to become what she really wanted to be, a wife and mother. On her grave her name is spelled Sibbell. She signed it Sebal on a pension application and it is listed as Sibel in the 1810 census. There is a statue of her on horseback at Carmel, NY.
She rode to warn the towns in her area that the British were on the march on April 19, 1775, so in a way she did fight for independence since it was the start of the revolution. Yet, independence was not declared until July 4, 1776 and Congress did not approve independence until Aug. 1776.
The Sybil gave prophecies. Those who wanted these came to the temple, made offerings, and were given an answer to their questions. There were Sybil temples or shrines throughout the Mediterranean area - originating in Persia-Babylonia and spreading through Corinth, Athens, Delphi etc, and famously the Temple of Vesta in Rome where the Sybilline Books of prophesies were housed.
On April 26th 1777 Sybil Luddington was the eldest daughter of Colonel Henry Luddington and Abigail Luddington's 12 children. When a messenger brought her father the news that Danbury Ct was burning and the British were advancing Sybil who was 16 and rode over 40 miles through bad stormy weather and treacherous roads to wake the men in her father's 7th Regement of Duchess County NY Militia. She started her ride sometime after 9pm and continued to dawn. She rode from Carmel to Mahopac to Kent Cliffs and on to Farmers Mills. Upon returning home she was welcomed by 400 of her fathers company. The men joined in the fight and eventually pushed the British back to the Long Island Sound. Sybil had a postage stamp in her honor in 1981. Paul Revere rode 14 miles in 2 hours in good weather but most people don't know about young Sybil.

The area would become four times larger. The area increase is always the perimeter increase, squared. For example. If the sides of a square were quadrupled, the area would become sixteen times larger.
