In order to change a mixed number to a decimal, you must first make it an improper fraction. To do this, you multiply the whole number by the denominator, then you add the numerator. You take this number and put it on top of the original denominator.

Now that it is in this form, divide the new numerator by the denominator.

Example

4 1/2 --> 4 x 2 + 1 = 9 --> 9/2 --> 9 divided by 2 = 4.5

*The numerator is the top number on a fraction.

*The denominator is the bottom number on a fraction.

BUTYou don't have to change the number to an improper fraction. Using the example above.

just divide the numerator by the denominator and this gives you the numbers on the right side of the decimal point and the 4 is the number on the left side of the decimal point. (also you should know 1/2 is .50)

Another example:

526/30 = 5. (26 divided by 30)

= 5.87
