What you are trying to figure out is WHAT PART (or percent) something is of something else. Whenever we break things into pieces we are dividing. If you break your candy bar into two pieces so you can share half of it, you are dividing it and, in this case, each person would get 50% of the candy bar. The equation is 1/2=.50 or 50%. (In words it would be, "One candy bar divided for two people equals fifty percent for each person.")

Try the same division process with other small numbers to double check. Two is what percent of ten? The equation is 2/10=.20 or 20%.

If you have to find 20% of 'something', multiply 'something' by 0.2 or 2/10 or elsedivide 'something' by 5 . Whichever is easiest for you ... they're all the same.

Let's say you have $50. To find 20% of $50, you multiply 0.20 by $50.
