→ 50 ml : 2 l
= 50 ml : 2 × 1000 ml .... converting to same units
= 50 ml : 2000 ml ............ converted to same units
= 50 : 2000 ......................... units the same so can now be removed
= 1 : 40 ................................. dividing through by [highest] common factor 50.

→ ratio of 50 ml to 2 l simplifies to 1 : 40.
