A Prime number is a natural number greater than one that can only be divided evenly by itself and 1. A composite number is the opposite of a prime number. By definition, every natural number greater than one is either prime or composite.

A prime number is a positive integer that is only divisible by 1 and itself and is not 1. The first prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7 and 11.

A composite number is a positive integer that is not a prime and is not 1. The first composite numbers are 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10. They are called composite numbers because they can be "composed" of smaller factors, like 4 = 2 × 2; 6 = 2 × 3; 8 = 2 × 2 × 2; etc.
