To find the prime factors all you need to do is find all factors, and identify which ones are prime numbers.

12=1*12=2*6=3*4

factors=1,2,3,4,6,12

Prime numbers can only be divided by 1 and the number itself. Thus the prime factors of 12 are 2 and 3 (1 is, by definition, not prime (i'm not exactly sure how to explain why))
