The greatest common factor, or GCF, is the largest positive integer that will divide evenly with no remainder into all the members of a given set of numbers. When applied to a numerator and a denominator, it is a way to reduce equivalent fractions to their simplest form. The GCF of 6 and 9 is 3. If you divide 6 and 9 by 3, you get 2 and 3.

6/9 = 2/3

The GCF of 2 and 3 is 1. If the GCF of a numerator and a denominator is 1, the fraction is in its simplest form.

You can take the greatest common factor, to simplify the fraction: once you know the greatest common factor (or any common factor, for that matter), you can divide numerator and denominator by this common factor, to get a simpler fraction.
