Cubic measurements are "IN" cubic measurements - they cannot be "IN" a linear measurement.

A "linear" item is something which only has length - a piece of string, as it were.

A "square" item is something which only has area: length and breadth - a sheet of paper, as it were.

A "cubic" item is something which has volume: length, breadth and height - a brick, as it were.

If something measures 1 linear yard on three dimensions - i.e. its length is 1 yard, its breadth is 1 yard and its height it 1 yard then it measures 1 cubic yard and as this is 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet it is equivalent to 27 cubic feet.
