If you don't know a number exactly, but you know the range it's in, you can write it as an approximate value and a margin of error. For example, if a number is 1350 plus or minus 10, it's somewhere between 1340 and 1360. Statisticians will sometimes take this one step further, and write that "with 99% confidence, the number is 120 plus or minus 12". This means that a test which is accurate 99% of the time placed the number in the range from 108 to 132. This is known as a confidence interval.
