There are two types of Roulette tables, American and European.
In American Roulette there is a zero and a double zero on the table, making your single number straight up bet pay out 35-1.
In European Roulette there is only a single zero on the table, making your single number straight up bet pay out 36-1.
In roulette, betting any number 'straight up' means that you are betting that a specific number will appear on the next spin of the wheel. Straight up roulette wagers pay 35-1.
Straight up bets are made by placing chips in the center of the number on the roulette table. I emphasize the center of the number because placing across the borders of numbers indicate other types of bets (splits, streets, corners).

In roulette you can bet on color (red or black), even or odd, rows of numbers, groups of numbers, so straight up. Straight up means you bet on one number directly, the ball landing on the number you picked directly has the highest payout, with the lowest odds.
