whereas a triangular based pyramid has 6 edges, a square based has 10 edges, a pentagonal based has 10 and so on.

A pyramid is a generic term describing a polyhedron (solid shape). It consists of a base that is a polygon with n sides. To each edge of the polygon is attached a triangle and these meet at an apex.


The polygon at the base has n edges. Each triangle is joined to the ones on either side so these also contribute n edges. Thus a pyramid with an n-gon base has 2n edges.
