in japanese you usually write sideways like normal but on posters or when ever it is relevant you can write downwards. :)

There is a slider tab on the side. Move it to the write position. The slider has 3 positions; up, down and middle. I found up and down would not remove the write-protection. However the middle position worked like a charm. Hope this helps someone else.
