As far as I'm aware, it was started by the lead vocalist of 80's Hardcore Punk band Minor Threat as an alternative to leading a sex, drugs and rock & roll lifestyle that comes with the fame the band achieved. It was given it's name through the band's song of the same name and remained a prominent ideal throughout the 80's Hardcore Punk scene worldwide! It still exists in the much smaller hardcore scene that exists today! However, it has also been adopted by followers of modern hardcore punk and metal derivatives such as Metalcore, Deathcore and Post-Hardcore.
