- In the case of a parallelogram (including rhombus, rectangle and square) it is base multiplied by the perpendicular distance between the base and the side parallel to it.
- In the case of a trapezium, it is the average length of the parallel sides multiplied by the perpendicular distance between them.
- In all other cases (kite, arrowhead and the general shape which has no specific name) it is necessary to draw a diagonal which will divide the quadrilateral into two triangles. Calculate the area of each triangle and sum the result.
