Area is the measure of a two-dimensional space enclosed by a shape, and surface area is the sum of all the areas of the faces of a three-dimensional solid.

In your mind, look at all of its flat faces, even the ones you can't see in the picture. -- One at a time, write down the area of each flat face. -- When you have them all, add up all the areas of the flat faces. -- The sum of all the faces is the area of the whole solid figure.
