it was started in the 80's by a Washington d.c. punk/hardcore band called minor threat. listen to: "straight edge" by minor threat.

however, the x's came from the venues, at the time, were pubs and anyone underage would be marked with an "x" on their hand. eventually people started doing it themselves and some still do today.
