3-member committees from 12 candidates = (12 x 11 x 10) / (3 x 2) = 220 committees9-member committees = (12 x 11 x 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4) / (9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2) = 220 committees.By George! That's right!

Five committee members.

Contrary to some published reports, John Roberts' hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee began on September 13, 2005 (not September 12) and concluded on the afternoon of September 15. Roberts answered questions and gave 20 hours of testimony over a 2 1/2 day period. On September 22, 2005, Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter (R/D-PA) and the remaining Committee voted 13-5 to send Roberts to the full Senate with a recommendation for approval. The Senate confirmed the new Chief Justice on September 29, 2005, by a vote of 78-22.
Four types of committees in Congress are: 1. Standing Committees- permanent, public policy 2. Joint Committees- both Senate/House members 3. Select Committees- temporary, specific purpose 4. Conference Committees- joint/select, reconcile differences between House/Senate versions of proposed bills.
The question implies Kagan's name was withdrawn at some point, or that a majority of the Senate Judiciary Committee voted against her on the first day of her hearing. This information is false. The Committee takes only one vote, at the conclusion of the nominee's hearing.Kagan was approved by a ballot of 13-6 on the second day of her hearing; there was no prior vote. The nominee's support ran along political lines, as has become the norm in Congress for both Democrats and Republicans. Senator Lindsey Graham, (R - SC) crossed party lines and cast the sole Republican vote. The issue was sent to the full Senate with a Committee recommendation in favor of confirmation. Justice Kagan was confirmed by a vote of 63-37 on August 5, 2010.

the committe had 12 members while the directery had 5 memeber-apex The Directory had a legislature, while the Committee was essentially a Dictatorship
The number of the members in the senate is 9. So that if they have to vote, it will always be 5 to 4. Not 5 to 5. So that one party overrules. :] Hope that helped.

Your governing documents may determine the number of members on the committee, and there may be no limit. Generally committee charters listed members, including at least one board member, together with the tasks, resources and time limits given to the committee. In committee work, it is advantageous that membership be limited to odd numbers, so that there are no tie votes within the committee.
