An improper fraction is one with a bigger number on the top than on the bottom.

The number 6 is the same as the fraction 6/1 (because 6 divided by 1 = 6)

At the moment, you can not do 6/1 + 1/2 because the bottom numbers on the fractions are different.

So you need to multiply both sides of the fraction 6/1 to get 12/2 (because 12 divided by 2 = 6)

So 12/2 + 1/2 = 13/2
