Study designs for research tend to fall in two broad categories-descriptive or analytic. A cross sectional design is an ex of Descriptive study. It describes the occurrence of disease and disability in terms of person, place, and time using prevalence surveys, surveillance data, and other routinely collected data to describe a phenomena.

Analytic designs explain etiology and causal associations. Ex) cohort or case control aim to estimate the strength of a relationship between an exposure and an outcome.
