"Two regular polygons both have n sides. One of the polygons is inscribed in an the other is circumscribed about a circle of radius r. Fin d the area between the two polygons in terms of n and r."
I think it is asking for the pace that would be between the outsides of the shapes, but I don;t know. I keep looking over the formulas and I am utterly lost. Anyone major in geometry, or has come across his question before?

You can do so using coordinate (or analytical) geometry.
Bit of a strange question, if you mean How did it start, Euclid is often called the "father of geometry". Go to Wikipedia.org, "The World's Encyclopedia" and search geometry they will have a history section.
