Independent variables can take values within a given boundary. The dependent variable will take values based on the independent variable and a given relationship at which the former can take its values.

A dependent variable depends on the independent variable. For example, if you are trying to graph the growth of a mouse over a time period of two years, the dependent variable would be the mouses growth because the mouses growth depends on how much time has passed, thus this makes time the independent variable and the mouses growth the dependent one.
