For example to keep soil nitrogen enriched farmers in Illinois generally plant one year of corn (the more valuable one that takes away nitrogen) then one year of soybean (the less valuable that replenishes nitrogen). This is a simple ratio but will vary by area, plants used, weather, fertilizer, ect.
