If the denominators are not the same, then you have to use equivalent fractions which do have a common denominator . To do this, you need to find the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators. To add fractions with unlike denominators, rename the fractions with a common denominator. Then add and simplify.

Adding fractions is achieved by adding the numerators as long as the denominators are the same. When the denominators are the same the fractions are "like fractions".

With different denominators they are "unlike fractions"; to be able to add them they need to be converted in to equivalent fractions with the same denominators. They are then "like fractions" and can be added.

To add unlike fractions - fractions with different denominators - you first convert the fractions so they have the same denominator. After that, it's exactly the same as adding fractions which have the same denominator from the start.
