To show addition it is easiest to use a number line

If you add a positive number to anything you get a bigger (more positive) number. for instance adding 5 to 6, find 6 on the number line and count on 5 more, you should come to 11
Similarly if you start with -3 and add 5, you will reach 2
If you add a negative number to anything you get a smaller (more negative) number. For instance adding -5 to 6, find 6 on the number line and count back 5, you should come to 1
similarly if you start with -6 and add -5 you should reach -11
If you subtract a negative number you have less negative, so you actually get more positive. So a sum written like this -6 - -5, you would find -6 on the number line and count five places towards the positive numbers, reaching -1
