If the power is a positive integer, then it represents multiplication of the same number of "bases". Thus,

34 = 3*3*3*3

or

85 = 8*8*8*8*8

Also any number to the power 0 is equal to 1.

Finally, a number raised to a negative number is the same as its reciprocal raised to the corresponding positive power.

Thus

3-4 = (1/3)4 = (1/3)*(1/3)*(1/3)*(1/3)
