decimals to fractions 0.1 = 1/10 0.456 = 456/1000 0.986747 = 986747/1000000
here are a few examples. you put the decimal over a power of 10, the number of 0's equals the number of digits after the first "0.", other zero's included.
the decimal 0.00001 has 5 numbers after the first "0." so the fraction will be over 100,000 (5 zeros) so the fraction for 0.00001 = 1/100000 ?don't forget to reduce your fractions As per above instructions:
3.8 = 3 and 8/10 ("three and eight tenths") which reduces to 3 and 4/5 (divide top and bottom of fraction by 2)
Similarly,
0.005 = 0 and 5/1000 = 5/1000 = 1/200 (divide top and bottom by 5)

  • Count the number of digits after the decimal point = d, say.
  • Remove the decimal point from the decimal number, this is the numerator.
  • The denominator is 10^d or 1 followed by d zeros.
  • Simplify the fraction if required.

Do the division. The line in a fraction that separates the numerator and the denominator can also be read as "divided by."

7/8 = 7 divided by 8 = 0.875
