A simple method involves cutting a rubber band. Then the rubber band straight line is stretched over the scatter diagram and moved about until you feel that 50 % of your data is on one side of the temporary line and the other 50 % is on the other side of the line.

Often the data is grouped such that a lot of points fall on the imaginary line of the rubber band and only a few oddballs are positioned well away from the line.

We think of this method as the " Best Fit " method, using your judgment to decide the best fitting trend line.

A scientist was making a graph of his data He wanted to show the trend over time between two variables What types of graphs should he use?

Scatter graph. Double-line Graph

Does the trend line always pass through every point on a scatter plot?

No. When you draw a best line of fit on the scattered plot, the line would not be straight.

How do you make a graph on graph paper?

First make a table of values, then draw axes and label them appropriately Then plot points carefully, and join with a curve or line (the particular way of drawing the line depends on the type of graph: scientific, scatter or mathematical.) Scientific graphs have values resulting from experiments. You draw a curve that follows the general trend of the points. (And passes within experimental error of the points) Scatter graphs are plotted with a straight line of best fit. Mathematical graphs should be joined with curves that pass exactly through the points.

Is a line graph the same as a trend graph?

No. Generally speaking, a trend graph has time on the horizontal axis. That is not always the case with line graphs.

What trend line means?

The trend line for a scatter plot is a line that best captures the nature of the relationship between two variables. It may or may not be straight. What is the difference between a line graph and a scatter graph?

A line graph would be what you plot for a function. for example, y = X2. Plotting this will result in a continuous line.A scatter graph will result from measuring a population or an experiment. For example, if you plotted the weight vs height for your class members, you would have a scatter graph.
