Most schools teach you to "round 5 upwards". This is wrong since it introduces an upward bias. See below for more details. The IEEE standard 754 is to round 5 up or down so that the new last digit is even. This is also "round five to even".

The schools method rounds 1, 2, 3 and 4 downwards and 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 upwards, while 0 is not rounded. If the numbers at the rounding boundary are randomly distributed, you will round upwards 4/10 of the time and up 5/10 of the time: more upward rounding than downwards so creating a bias in results.
