It would rather depend what you are investigating but the first move would be to marshall the facts and known values in a logical order, then analyse the problem to establish the necessary calculations, etc and the appropriate order in which to do them.
If the mathematics is to form part of a formal paper then you would have to pay due regard to the presentation as well. You would also have to be clear what you are trying to do: show how to do the maths, or to use the maths as a tool within the greater investigation.
