This is a pretty straitforward algebra problem. 2x2 - 5 = 93 Add five to both sides of the equation. 2x2 = 98 Divide both sides by two. x2 = 49 Take the square root of both sides. SQRT(x2) = SQRT(49)

x = +/- 7 Note that the square root of 49 has two solutions: +7 and -7, because 72 = (-7)2 = 49.
