You add or subtract some quantity on both sides of the equation, so that you only have "x" on one side of the equation. Example:

4x + 3 = 2x - 5

Subtract 2x on each side, this leaves you:

4x - 2x + 3 = 2x - 2x -5

2x + 3 = -5
